From insightful do’s to crucial don’ts, buckle up for a rollercoaster ride towards academic success!
Do make sure you discuss Author's Perspective
Make sure to include in your discussion at the end of your answers the author's perspective. This can include their deliberate choices of character development, their focus points and prominent themes.
Do make sure you discuss Author’s Influences
All authors have things that matter to them, whether that be important themes, historical or social influences, or an experience that they have had or can relate to. An author will usually use these important aspects in their writing. So, figure out what they are by considering the time period, social impacts, news reports or the author's history or lifestyle then find out how that is shown through their writing and discuss it in your discussion segment of your answer.
Do make sure you have a Critical Opinion
A critic isn't someone who puts down another person. A critic is someone who analyses and discusses their experience and backs it up with evidence. It is a good idea to have a critical opinion in your NCEA exam answer so that you analyse the text with depth and perception.
Do make sure you Connect Personally with the Text
Similar to being a critic, if you can connect with the text you will be able to discuss the text with depth and perception. Connecting with the text can include what you would do in the experience, whether you agree with a character's actions or decision, what part was captivating or irritating to you. But most importantly, make sure you always explain why afterwards.
