Do tutors have enemies? What's the deal with anxiety anyway?

I'm a firm believer in light and dark, and how they coexist together. You can't have light, without the dark.

So, if tutors were to have allies who cooperate with them and generally walk in parallel with improving the learning of a student, surely there must be an enemy?

One of the biggest threats to learning is anxiety.

Is anxiety a tutor's worst enemy?

Anxiety is a feeling that we all experience at one point or another. Let's look at what anxiety does to someone to warrant disdain:

Anxiety can affect your ability to connect with others. It can make you feel nervous and hesitant, which can lead to a lack of engagement. When you are anxious, you may find it difficult to explain your ideas clearly, leading to confusion and frustration when working in groups - and in some cases a battle internally with yourself.

Anxiety can also affect your ability to manage your time effectively. It can cause you to procrastinate, leading to a backlog of schoolwork, that can be overwhelming. This can lead to a decrease in productivity, and in turn, a decrease in the quality of work that is produced.

To combat anxiety, it is a good idea to develop healthy coping mechanisms. This can include exercise, meditation, or even therapy. It is also important to remember that mistakes are a natural part of the learning process, and that it is okay to not know everything.

When you focus on your strengths and build on them, rather than dwelling on your weaknesses, you may find a decrease in anxiety.

It is also important to remember that mistakes are a natural part of the learning process, and that it is okay to not know everything.

Therefore, although anxiety could interfere with a student's learning, it is not a tutor's worst enemy.

It is a disorder that can be treated with love and care, and that is what we do when we come across students with anxiety. We work with them to cope with it and manage it, in a way where students can still strive and reach their potential.

When you are feeling closed off from learning in the classroom, remember that we have supportive teachers who understand anxiety. We can support you through your NCEA, with love and care.
