When analysing text for the NCEA English 'Unfamiliar Text' exam, students can feel overwhelmed. To boost their confidence in NCEA English, we follow 5 simple steps in my effective tutorials.
I will discuss "text" in this blog. I am not referring to text messages on your phone. English teachers call stories, poems, novels, extracts and articles "text". Films are also in this category, by mostly known as a "visual text".
4 reasons why NCEA students may feel overwhelmed:
The language style can be confusing
There may be an abundance of complex vocabulary
The topic or narrative might not be immediately clear
Students struggle to relate the text to their own experiences
These factors can also lead to a lack of interest. So, how can students effectively analyse text to gain a better understanding?
5 easy steps to help tackle the NCEA English Unfamiliar Text exam:
Utilise prior knowledge
Research word definitions
Explore visual imagery
Consider tone and perspective
Provide encouragement
Allow me to delve deeper into this topic.
Prior knowledge
Commencing a text analysis by tapping into prior knowledge enables students to recognise familiar elements within the text. This boosts their confidence as they make connections and form opinions based on what they already know.
Research definitions
I prefer to examine text line by line, identifying words that make sense and clarifying those that may be perplexing. I provide the definitions of these words and link the word's relevance to the text's themes and intentions.
Explore visual imagery
Visual imagery is important. By presenting images related to the text's subject matter, students can enhance their understanding and create vivid mental images. This makes the process of analysing text easier for NCEA students.
Tone and perspective
Cultivating empathy and perspective is essential when analysing text.
This is achieved through guiding questions and discussions such as:
a.) What emotions is the character experiencing?
b.) How would you react in this scenario?
c.) How might the character feel in this situation?
d.) How would you feel in this circumstance?
This approach aids students in grasping the tone of the piece as well as understanding the emotional responses it evokes.
Lastly,
Encouragement
Above all, it's crucial to acknowledge students' progress and express pride in their efforts, no matter how small. Recognizing their growth and willingness to learn provides a sense of accomplishment and boosts their confidence. Witnessing their development is always a source of pride for me.
While NCEA exams may seem daunting initially, expert teachers like us ensure that students are well-prepared. By working together, we boost confidence in our students, empowering them to navigate their academic journey independently.
