Speaking to others

What will I learn with my online tutor during our online tutorials?

Shy and anxious students will work towards speaking in group situations. The online tutor will carefully select activities designed for shy and anxious students to contribute to conversations.

Why is it important to learn how to speak in groups?

Have a voice matters. Speaking is another way to communicate with the wider world. When we are able to speak, we open up the ability to express ourselves and share ideas with others. Speaking is also used in discovery, when being independent and being a part of society. A part of learning who we are is about learning how we communicate and share ideas with others.

Speaking can also be used to show respect and kindness to others, such as replying when someone asks you a question. Asking your own questions shows you are interested in knowing more about someone or something.

What if I am shy or anxious?

Tovah used to be shy also. In fact, she sometimes comes across moments where she still is. But she knows a variety of helpful techniques and activities which will allow you to reach your potential and become more confident in yourself. We use praise, humour and relatable storytelling to assure you can feel safe to speak in front of the online tutor and others.

Speeches

What will I learn with my online tutor during our online tutorials?

Confidence & Communication students will work towards the appropriate speaking level of their age and/or the optimal NZ curriculum level. In most cases, students will have the opportunity to say a speech in front of an audience. The audience is usually the class; however, some students get the chance to say speeches in front of their school or the wider community. The online tutor will carefully select resources for the student to ensure they reach their speech delivery potential. With a focus on delivery the student will learn how to use correct sounds, articulation, volume, and tone when informing, persuading or entertaining an audience. The goal is to feel more confident internally, while also presenting a confident performance externally, as well.

Why is it important to learn how to speak to others?

Speaking is another way to communicate with the wider world. When we are able to speak, we open up the ability to express ourselves and share ideas with others. Being able to speak in front of others will open opportunities to advocate for good causes, filtering through deductive thinking processes, and learning to lead others.

Speaking can also be used to show respect and kindness to others, such as having a nice tone of voice, learning to project rather than yell, respectfully speaking your mind.

What if I am too anxious to do my speech assessment?

The great thing about Tovah is that she is trained in the performing arts and has worked with many anxious and shy students who were afraid of speaking in front of others. She has developed and shared various resources and techniques with her tutors to make sure students feel more confident in themselves and in turn take more risks when speaking in front of others. As Tovah was also once a shy child, she can empathise and tutor at the pace that works best for you. You can also ask your teacher at school whether there are other options to allow you to sit the assessment in a different format. Some schools allow the 4-person audience rule and/or filming your assessment. Breaking down the steps is likely to alleviate a lot of the anxiety.

Interviews

What will I learn with my online tutor during our online tutorials?

Being a confident speaker and answering questions takes practise. We may have all the skills but showcasing who we are and talking highly about ourselves during interviews can be hard to do. Students will focus on answering questions purposefully.

Why is it important to learn to be confident in interviews?

In employment interviews, employers are looking for people who they can trust to contribute to the succession of their business. If students are confident in what they can bring to the table and can discuss this with others, then they may become successful applicants for the job they desire.

What if I don't have a CV or Cover Letter to bring to my job interview?

Being prepared for your job interview is important. If you enter with certainty in yourself and the situation, you are inclined to feel more relaxed about the little things. So having a professional CV and Cover Letter means you are being prepared. Tovah can develop a standard CV and cover letter ready for your interview. The CV and Cover Letter will showcase your skills and are a great thing to refer to when you are talking about your achievements and skills with the employer. Deluxe CV are also available, if you are wanting your CV to make a statement.
